Do it Yourself Games Part 1 of 2 - Alphonsine Chess - A Goddesschess historical guide for the perplexed craftsperson
These pages were inspired by Rev. Craig L. Cowing of Newport, New Hampshire. With help from his wife, Mr. Cowing 's reconstruction of the Alphonsine chessmen and period costumes of the age offers a nice example of how everyday people respond energetically to games in general and the culture of chess in particular. The total cost for the board game project was around $30.
Do it Yourself Games Part 2 shows a recently refurbished Alphonso set as well as some excellent adventures in backgammon and a differently crafted Charlemagne chess set.

on the internet. The gist: A research team claims to have moved a
step closer to proving that chess originated around the northern Indian
city of Kanauj in the 5th century. Even so, we have some "questions"
